The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Each year, CSW brings together in New York governments and civil society from around the world. It is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, where member states evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. It also provides excellent networking and profile-raising opportunities. There are various types of events which civil society can hold and access. These include Side Events (held in the UN Building and sponsored by governments) and Parallel Events (organised by civil society).

The priority theme for 2019 is ‘Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls’.
