During this first week of the 61st session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) a new initiative will be launched with the aim of creating a platform entitled ‘Gender Equality and Religion for the Gender Responsive Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The initiative will be led by UN Women on behalf of:

The Side by Side faith movement for gender justice will be represented at the launch by Clare Payne of Christian Aid who will join a panel discussion on commitments to gender equality from religious and institutional perspectives.

Last year the Commission on the Status of Women in its 60th session recognized for the first time the role of faith-based organisations in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women (para 23 of the Agreed Conclusions).

The new platform will aim to bring together religious and traditional leaders, leaders of faith-based and civil society organizations, as well as gender and development experts to unpack how achieving gender equality can be pursued from within a religious lens and explore how this intersectionality can be applied across the various Sustainable Development Goals.

The launch of this initiative will be held on 15 March 2017 at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations. The event will feature a high-level segment followed by the panel discussion with religious leaders, faith actors, and experts.

Side by Side will be holding its own launch event during CSW61 in the Sanctuary of St Peter’s Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York, on Friday 17 March, 10am – 12pm. More information about the Side by Side launch at
