Side by Side Burundi focus on advocacy

Inheritance law, promoting women’s leadership in the church, and addressing discriminatory social/cultural norms will be the focus areas for Side by Side member organisations and faith leaders in Burundi.

These themes were identified during a Side by Side meeting held in Bujumbura, Burundi, at the end of September.

At present, women in Burundi do not have the right to inherit land from their husbands and daughters cannot inherit from their fathers. Participants in the meeting recognised that this adds to the perpetuation of poverty and inequalities.

Those attending included the President and other members of the Conseil national des Eglises du Burundi (CNEB), representatives from the Anglican Church in Burundi, The Evangelical Lutheran  Church of Burundi, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Free Methodist Church in Burundi, RCRSS, Sant’Egidio/Burundi, Christian Aid, and a spokesperson for the Islamic community.
