Representatives of the Side by Side steering group are participating in the Annual Conference of the Partnership for Religion and Sustainable Development (PaRD), hosted by the UK government’s Department for International Development at Wilton Park, UK.

The theme of the conference is the role of faith leaders in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with particular focus on the three developing work streams of PaRD: Gender Equality and Empowerment; Health; and Sustaining Peace.

Clare Paine, co-chair of Side by Side’s steering group, working closely with Senior Gender Policy Advisor for Islamic Relief Worldwide, Iman Pertek, has been involved in building PaRD’s Gender Equality and Empowerment work stream.

Clare and Iman together serve as the PaRD Partners’ co-lead for this, alongside the governmental co-lead Global Aid Canada and the UN co-lead UN Women. So that their input is as representational as possible of PaRD’s Partners, Clare and Iman co-chair an international inter-faith task group with whom they consult as the Gender work stream develops.

The work stream has developed a work plan in response to Sustainable Development Goal 5 ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’ and the priorities identified by PaRD’s Partners and Members.

The work plan has a focus on sexual and gender-based violence with particular recognition of education, economic empowerment and rights as important intersecting areas of work.

As the PaRD Annual Conference began, Clare affirmed the Side by Side’s relationship with PaRD: “Side by Side’s partnership with PaRD bears witness to the movement’s commitment to collaboration”, she said. “It is one important way of maximising opportunities to realise a world where ‘people are free from cultural and interpersonal systems of privilege and oppression, and from violence and repression rooted in gender inequality,’ as set out in Side by Side’s vision.”

An update will follow the conference, with a clearer indication of how Side by Side members can participate and benefit from the PaRD initiative.
